Ithaca farms open doors

Nine farms in Tompkins County opened their doors in an effort to boost awareness, and sales, of locally grown food.

At a bean and wheat processing plant in Brooktondale, farmers answered questions about how they grow their food and how they process it.

"We're just exploring the area and just exploring all the different farms that are here. We like to buy local and it's a nice thing to do here in Ithaca, is to enjoy the fruits of what all the farms offer," said Neil Schill, a Brooktondale resident.

"Just that human connection that you make between consumer and producer is one part of it. And people getting a sense that there's real people doing this, it's not some distant corporation," said Erick Smith, a partner of Cayuga Pure Organics.

Whole Foods' Buyout Deal on Hold

A federal appeals court said yesterday that it needed more time to consider whether to block Whole Foods Market's takeover of rival Wild Oats Markets.

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit put the $565 million deal on hold until it could hear more arguments. The three-judge panel said, however, the decision "should not be construed in any way as a ruling on the merits" of the case.

Food Notes: In The Raw

This time, runners are baring all for a calendar whose proceeds will benefit the Fruit Tree Planting Foundation, a charity dedicated to planting fruit trees to benefit communities, especially the needy, and improve the surrounding air, soil and water.

The calendar is the brainchild of the Bimbler's Sound running group and is dedicated to holistic chef and runner Frank Giglio, who recently moved to Arizona. Giglio joined the group in 2006 to improve his fitness, and his running partners often showed up at the deli counter where Giglio worked in Guilford to taste his "green juice," Bimble Burgers and other organic dishes.

Because Giglio's specialties are raw foods and trail running, the calendar combines a recipe of the month with a runner sprinting in the raw.
